A romantic break amidst sea and forests

Enjoy the delights of the Landes during a romantic weekend for two: the ocean, lakes and forests make an enchanting setting!

Courant d'Huchet_A.LAMOUREUX_La_VélodysseeTake a weekend break for two and enjoy the peace and quiet of the Landes coastline. We offer: freewheeling on bikes through pine forests, tranquil ponds and lakes, and the ocean with its sweeping, sandy beaches… an idyllic and romantic setting in which to relax and reconnect with your loved one.

Itinerary highlight: Le Courant d’Huchet: accessible on foot or by traditional boat, this nature reserve is rich in flora and fauna. It links the Léon Lake to the Atlantic Ocean and offers visitors an exotic experience at the heart of the ‘Amazon’ of the French Landes.

Day 1: Léon (10 km)

Leon lake_A.LAMOUREUX_La_VélodysseeWelcome to lovers….of nature and cycling! A stopover place on La Vélodyssée, Léon is a small friendly village where you can enjoy the charms of local Landais culture and the authentic style of its traditional houses. Stay alert, though, as you will be cycling through Léon by road.

Having left your suitcases and car keys (permanently) at the 2-star Hôtel du Lac (Accueil Vélo accredited), you are now ready to enjoy a relaxing weekend at your own pace. With its perfect location on the banks of the Léon Lake, the hotel is the ideal starting point from which to explore the lake and the Courant d’Huchet nature reserve. Sit back and let a boatman take you on a tour by ‘galupe’, a traditional flat-bottomed boat.

Feeling peckish? Try the delicious crêpes served in the hotel tearooms or head to the centre of Léon where the artisan chocolatier at L’Etalon Noir will welcome you for a chocolate tasting session.

Take a break for a moment on the banks of the Léon Lake –tomorrow promises to be a very busy day!

Looking for a good place to eat this evening? Ask the hotel manager for some suggestions, or try the Tenoy farm inn, where you can enjoy their dish of local delicacies, the ‘Assiette de Pays’.

Day 2: Léon < > Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains (27.6 km)

natural reserve of Courant d'Huchet_A.LAMOUREUX_La_VélodysseeAfter a gentle wake up, and the luxury of breakfast in bed, you’re ready for a cycle ride in the Landes sunshine. Head to the seaside resort of Vieux-Boucau for an invigorating spin around the Marine Lake. Bike parking facilities are available, so you can leave your bikes if you want to go walking.

After lunch on the harbour at Albret, you’re spoilt for choice as to what to do next. Maybe you’d prefer a relaxing stroll along the ocean’s edge, hand in hand and barefoot on the silky sand. Sportier, more adventurous couples might choose a surf lesson, learning to conquer the waves. Food lovers will enjoy sharing the fresh, sweet flavours of an ice cream from the artisan ice cream maker’s shop, Le Coconuts.

On the way back, why not stop off at Moliets et Mâa? If you are starting to feel hungry, linger a while and enjoy a romantic dinner for two overlooking the sea. Try Chez Vincent, where you can indulge in a delicious platter of seafood. This is also your chance to admire the sunset over the Centrale beach. What could be more romantic than sharing such a moment with your special loved one?!
Remember to take bike lights if you expect to be cycling back after nightfall!

Day 3: Léon < > Saint-Girons-Plage (26.4 km)

beach of Vielle Saint Girons_CDT40_La_VélodysséeBefore you leave, go to the centre of Léon and wander around the aisles of the traditional market (open every morning in the summer season). Here you can discover local Landais dishes and specialities. For those who fancy a picnic on the beach, why not stock up on provisions here at the market?

For your last day, hop on your bikes and join La Vélodyssée going towards Saint-Girons-Plage. Settle down on the warm sand to enjoy the delicacies you purchased at the market. Make the most of the beach and its iodized aromas one last time, before heading off into the depths of the Landais forest.

The afternoon will be outdoors and active as you explore the Vielle-Saint-Girons Lake. At Au fil de l’eau, the instructor will give you a lesson in stand up paddle - a sport now very much in vogue in South West France. A highly original way of exploring this freshwater lake.

The return to Léon brings your weekend in the Landes to an end. Time to start planning your next romantic getaway, for just the two of you.
